Graeme's News

Posted by Graeme - October 14th, 2024

At the top of the year I began talks with @prosciuttoman about 2 Left Thumbs possibly publishing an upcoming game made by himself and the Tunaware team (which includes @postelvis @paytonio @roverkibb)

Come hang out with the team, and discuss their games in the official Tunaware Discord server!

We must have bounced around ideas on a half dozen different pitches, discussing what worked best in each, and weighing out which would be most exciting to develop into a full release. Then almost out of nowhere back in March, the team "cracked" their action platformer Croak Crusader, and it quickly became the frontrunner!

(Thank you to @nicocommunism for the awesome keyart!!)

It felt important to let people in on the development of this one. It's an easy game to learn but a hard one to master. So first off, we are releasing Croak Crusader: Spawn of the Spore Spectre. This is a standalone, FREE prologue! You can play the demo NOW!

Please be sure to drop a demo review on Steam (this is a new feature, and will help give the demo a boost!)

We'll be taking on feedback from the community and applying that to the planned, full game Croak Crusader: the Champion of Canada. That one will instead be paid, so we want to make extra sure the game/series is the best it can be!

The latest title from Newgrounds own @Willops is coming to Steam on AUG 21st!

And now you can play an older, web-friendly build on Newgrounds NOW.

Paper Planet is a doodly, planet-defender, bullet hell roguelike with Flash-inspired visuals. Born from a love of my childhood favorite Flash games, and modern roguelikes I've sunk countless hours into, taking the best of both planets. Uh..? of both worlds!

Please be sure to Wishlist the game.

It helps us out immensely, by bumping the game in Steam's algorithm!

The FULL RELEASE offers plenty of additional feature to sink your teeth into!

  • Overhauled and optimized bullet engine
  • 150+ items with deep synergies
  • Multiple Planet Types & Game Modes
  • 1-4 player local co-op
  • LOADS of achievements and silly cosmetic upgrades

THE GAME

Rack and Slay is a casual, billiard roguelike. Collect powerups, draft items, and knock enemies into hazards or pockets! You can find a description of the game and impressions of the current prototype art on Steam. Mechanically the game is pretty far along already, but it could use a do-over on the visual front.

THE WORK

We are looking for a front-to-back replacement of the art. The game currently has:

  • ~15 Enemy types (all ball-shaped)
  • ~20 Arena objects (obstacles etc.)
  • ~10 Collectibles (power-ups etc.)
  • ~100 Items (passive "relics")

All of which will need new art, in addition to a few general assets (player ball, explosions, floor / wall textures) and overhauls to the UI and menus. If the game is well received, we'd like to continue adding to the game - so having the availability to return to the project post-release would be ideal.

APPLY NOW

If you wish to apply, please do so by filling out this Google Form.

Note that we're looking to work under a revenue share agreement. If you're interested, enter your details below and we'll get back to you!

Cheers!

Dead Estate

First off, Dead Estate is on sale for 35% off. Last month the Home Theater Update went live, and now the 2nd of 6 major updates for Dead Estate is coming in just 1 more month. So be sure to keep an eye out for that.

iu_822872_2083606.webp

In addition to that, there are now 2 more games available under 2 Left Thumbs Publishing (which is actually just me).

I'm always on the hunt for exciting new games and developers that I want to support, and I'm super excited to share them both.

Repella Fella: Prologue

As a spiritual successor to the Flash classics, Ray, @Philljc has been working solo on Repella Fella for the last 7 years! This point n click, choose your own adventure comedy is due out next year. We've made the first ~30 minutes available as a free Prologue! We want to use this to spread the word about the game, and also to gather early user feedback. So if you do try it out, don't forget to drop a review on Steam. That helps us out a lot!

iu_822873_2083606.webp

WizardChess

A chess-based roguelike deckbuilder! This is the newest addition to the 2 Left Thumbs catalog, even though the Steam page says it launched first. I got involved a while back to help update the game for a "re-launch" of sorts. It's priced at only $10, and is 20% for about 12 more hours. So if you're interested, don't miss out!

This is the first release I've been a part of that has no prior ties to Newgrounds. So I couldn't help but bring the Newgrounds to them! HUGE thank yous to @figburn for the new keyart, and @jumbs for the original soundtrack! Together, with the updated gameplay, this game has really sound it's identity.

(2006 - 2007)

The first username I can remember creating was for Knox's Korner in the early 2000's. I loved that forum dearly! But at some point a friend pointed me towards Newgrounds, and the rest is history. It was actually the same friend who first introduced me to Flash! Thanks for that Andrew!

I first joined Newgrounds back in 2006, deciding I would call myself "Blaze". Blaze was already taken, so I made due with Blaze28. I genuinely find that no more or less cringe than Blaze by itself. I've just never had any real attachment to the word, other than thinking it was kinda cool. 28 however remains my favourite number to this day - and I have no idea why!

(2007 - 2013)

I started THIS profile in 2007, with the name Goat-Man. Every subsequent username has been a name-change to this account. While debating the change, and brainstorming new names, I completely failed to check which of those ideas were already taken. This time, I wanted it to be "GoatMan". I pondered that out for days, if not weeks, and never once thought to look at it's availability before getting overlay attached to it. I remember at the time I was SO upset. "Hyphens are lame!" I thought loudly to nobody, in an empty room...

UNFORTUNATELY I had already taken down all my old uploads from Blaze28, planning to then upload them here instead. I regret that, because a few (no matter how craptacular they were) are now lost forever :(

After I pouted about it for a week or two, I decided I still liked the name enough to settle for, "Goat HYPHEN man!" I still liked it on multiple levels: I was playing a lot of Diablo (Goatmen monsters). Goats are silly and fun. And it felt like my own cornball superhero name (even though I never really leaned into that concept). And I only grew to love it more once I had a mascot. One I've never really let go of!

But I NEVER showed my profile to anyone. I guess I just never found the courage to share? "Yup, that's right. Goat hyphen man. That's me. That's a username I specifically chose for myself. I am the Goat Man." My closest friends knew. But I didn't talk about it much to new people I met. And often times outright avoided talking about it, which never felt good... And as I became more proud of my work, I also became more excited to share!

(2013 - 2022)

Each new name change was become more agonizing! I felt I was being indecisive, and worried that I'd regret losing it. Funny to think, considering how hesitant I was to pick Goat-Man in the first place!

I was making new friends in college, and I was excited to show my Newgrounds page to those with some really strong common interests! It felt like time for a more matúre username. It was a tough decision, but in 2013, I decided to sunset Goat-Man, and take up the much simpler name, "Noodle".

Noodle was literally the only nickname I've ever had, both in high school AND in college. But in either friend circle it's never been more than a handful of guys who say "Sup Noodle?" when I first see them, and then never again the rest of the hangout xD. At least felt more personal than my previous usernames! So while it was hard to let of Goat-Man, I felt really good about this change!

I decided my tribute to that old name would be to never change my forum signature! It even has a background that only made sense on the site design at that time. I've had it for this long, right?

iu_1062220_2083606.jpg

In a funny twist, 'Noodle' never really felt embraced by the online community - especially not the way Goat-Man was! Maybe it's too generic? Maybe it conflicted too directly with other Noodle-based usernames? It did always makes me feel a little like I was encroaching on the territory of some very well established artists! I further distanced myself from "Noodle" when I started making stuff on YouTube (and definitely confused things more than I needed to) with 2 Left Thumbs as a brand. Some commenters still call ME 2 Left Thumbs. That was never the intent xD

(1992 - Present)

Graeme.

I've had this name since birth, and I'll have it till I die.

It's the only name all friend groups and communities collectively know me as.

I have the benefit of having a less common spelling, of a somewhat uncommon name. So maybe with this old name/new username I can finally join the ranks of Cher, Madonna, Britney, Beyoncé and other mononymous known female music icons!

And - perhaps most importantly - I genuinely like my name! I always have. Like, 10% of people I meet pronounce it correctly (when asked I usually get them to say, "Grey. Um."). I will respond to almost anything that has the basic sounds or syllables in there. The most common by a MILE is "Gram". I've been called that my whole life by children and adults alike. I actually can't remember if there was I time in my life where I ever corrected people? Funny how someone who wanted to be so precise with these online username choices, was never bothered by his real life name frequently getting mangled. In fact I find it quite funny, and some of the most poor attempts are something I like to laugh about with my family <3

"Graeme" as a clean, standalone username is taken on heaps of other websites, which is maybe too bed? It's not like "Noodle" was any safer in that regard! "Noodle" must get picked within the first 100 users of any new site. Who care about this other sites anyways? This has always been my internet home!

I also think I steered clear from using "Graeme" back in the day, because I was scared of strangers finding me online. Maybe? Likely I was more scared people I knew might find it. Now I happily share with those who show an interest :)

I feel really good about this change. I still hold all my previous usernames dear for one reason or another. That's probably why I felt compelled to document the journey and reflect on my personal history. This change feels like the one I'm keeping for the long-haul.

I'm Graeme. It's a pleasure to meet you all again!

20 years ago today, we saw the release of Madness Combat. And now for 2 decades, @Krinkels has kept his series running with dozens of movies, a few flash games, and the full release of Madness: Project Nexus on Steam! I've been a fan for many years, and it was such an honor to interview both Krinkels and @Cheshyre to learn more about the series, and add their perspectives to this massive video project!

With Madness Day 2022 coming in just 2 months, I wanted to incentivize sharing this video, and payback the Newgrounds community at the same time.

I'll add $250 to the prize pool this year!

If the video crosses 250k views before Madness Day, I'll add another $250.

AND if Repella Fella hits 5k wishlists on Steam by then, I'll add another $500!

Strap yourselves in. It's nearly 2 full hours long!

You may notice it is titled Part 1. So now is a great time to announce that a follow-up video is already in production that will go in-depth on the Madness fandom, community, Madness Day, the infinite fan creations, and others who it has inspired over the years. I hope this pair of videos will do 2 decades of Madness justice!

Thank you all for your support :)

The timing of this works our rather well, coming hot off of Pico Day 2022!

First up, TWO upcoming games that 2 Left Thumbs (that's me!) is publishing, are Flash game continuations - with their first ever public demos debuting during the current Steam Next Fest!

Play some free demos, leave some feedback, and most importantly: Please WISHLIST!!

iu_666002_2083606.png

The first is Alice is Dead: Hearts and Diamonds. The originals creators @hyptosis @ImpendingRiot have teamed up with @kildorf to make this remake the best it could possibly be.

This will be a complete, from scratch, remake of the classic Flash game trilogy.

The demo is a near 1:1 remake of Episode 1, with brand new art, a modern engine, and some added details. We're so excited to show you how much things have changed with the full release!

iu_666001_2083606.png

Next is Repella Fella, an EPIC adventure, over 5 years in the making. This thing is fully animated and voice acted ALL by 1 person @philljc.

It is a spiritual successor to the Ray Flash series. For anyone who has been patiently waiting all these years for a proper Ray - Part 3, this is close as it's going to get. Everything is bigger, crazier, and more absurd than ever!

Give this demo a couple playthroughs, as you can find multiple solutions to the various problems, all leading to unique and excitingly over-the-top conclusions.

iu_666003_2083606.png

If that wasn't enough for you, my latest YouTube video is also all about Flash series continuations. These top-tier developers took their most successful Flash series, and followed them up with full releases on PC and consoles!

This installment includes Ray (yeah, I snuck that in there...), Decision, Swords and Souls, Chibi Knight, and Madness: Project Nexus. The video explains the source material, including what made them great, and a quick look at the new continuations that are keeping that Flash spirit alive!

I have a list of well over 100 Flash series, creators, and surrounding topics that I would love to cover in their own videos someday. But this seems like a great way to let people more quickly know about some of these follow-ups that are out there. I'm hoping to make this a mini-series within the larger Flashlight umbrella. These devs provided us with countless hours of free fun! The least we can do is pay back that dedication now.

----------------

Unrelated, but on a more personal note. Thank you for all the love you've given Kill Boe 3! I'm incredibly proud of it, and couldn't have done it without the help of SO many talented individuals! Someday I'll do a developer commentary on it, and talk about that process in greater detail.
